The 2012 Billboard Music awards
opened with a Party Rockin’ performance by LMFAO. The duo turned the MGM Grand into a huge
dance club belting out their major hits Party Rockin’, Sorry for Party Rockin’
and Sexy and I know It. Complete with a
huge bear as well as a zebra the duo gave a fun dance performance, which
wouldn’t be complete without the group in there underpants. LMFAO was a perfect
way to open this year’s award show. Ty
Burrell and Julie Bowen brought some big laughs to the hosting position, as
well as their own musical talent with a few of their own music videos.
A big award for the night was
given to Katy Perry. Lisa Marie Presley presented Katy with the Spotlight Award
which has only been presented to one other artist, Michael Jackson. Katy had
five number one hits go to number one on the charts, which is a huge
accomplishment. She is the only woman to
reach that kind of success.
A much anticipated performance
by Kelly Clarkson was second on the performance list. She sang her new single, Dark Side, and did
not disappoint. Her vocals were amazing,
hitting every note perfectly. The performance took place on an elevated stage
with Kelly in a beautiful red, floor length gown, and very simple makeup. The song definitely made an impact on Kelly
because as she was singing the last couple of notes she got choked up and had
a tear in the corner of her eye.
The newest British boy band
sensation The Wanted gave a fun dance performance to their two songs Chasing
the Sun and Glad You Came. The band
sounded good even getting the crowd involved by getting them to sing
along.
Chris Brown gave a high energy
performance of his hit Turn Up the Music.
It was a big dance performance with the fun free style of BMX bikes on a
very ramp. Although Chris Brown is back
and people are still supporting him, I cannot support him any longer. He is a
good performer but his attitude towards everything he has done is very disappointing.
The world lost a legend when
Donna Summer passed away. Natasha
Bedingfield gave a beautiful performance of Summer’s song Last Dance. Unfortunately, the performance was cut short and I
only to see about one minute of the tribute.
I’m not sure if the performance was cut on purpose, but I saw it as
disrespectful to Donna Summer’s memory.
Billboard’s Woman of the Year
was none other than the twenty two year old country girl, Taylor Swift. Taylor is a hard working woman and deserved
that honor as well as any other award she may win in the future. She was truly humbled by the experience and appreciates the opportunity she has been given.
Usher is back in the spotlight
and lighting up the charts with his dance hits once again.
His performance of his new song Scream was electrifying. He showcased his dancing abilities which are
always on point and even showed a little bit of his magic skills turning a
woman into a man, who looked just like Usher himself. Usher’s performance was the dance performance
of the night. He had crisp dance moves with the flair that only Usher has.
Boyfriend by Justin Bieber attempts
to show his skills at rapping. The
performance wasn’t anything to go crazy about. The parts of the song where
Bieber was “rapping” were very low making the music much louder than his
voice. Bieber did have some nice dance
moves, but overall the performance didn’t come close to being a favorite for
me.
New pop sensation Carly Rae Jepsen
gave the audience a pleasurable performance of her huge hit Call Me Maybe. She wore a super cute outfit that went way
out of the ordinary for most female performers because she was wearing
sneakers, yes sneakers. Her vocals were
great throughout the entire song and one could see she loves to sing and be on
stage. I loved the entire performance; it
was one of my favorites of the night.
Country superstar Carrie
Underwood gave us an incredible performance.
Fittingly large fans blew Carrie’s hair in a perfect vocal performance of
her new song Blown Away. She wore a
gorgeous red gown and had her golden hair blowing in the wind. Her vocals were perfectly done, which is what
is always expected from her and she always succeeds in an unblemished
performance.
If you put together rock, rap,
and a DJ you get the group Linkin Park. They performed their new single Burn It
Out. I was beyond excited when I heard
they were performing at the BBMA’s. The performance
was nothing short of spectacular. They
combine different genres of music to make killer performances every time.
The powerful voices of both the lead singer and the rapper made for an
exhilarating performance.
The crowd entered into the
Cirque Du Soleil for Katy Perry’s performance.
In a dream like performance Katy used a white piece of cloth to swing on
the entire time while singing her new song Wide Awake. The song was written by Katy for her new 3D movie
Part of Me. Katy Perry is always great to see perform
because she puts her heart and soul into every performance.
John Legend and Jordin Sparks
gave a beautiful performance in honor of the late Whitney Houston. Legend sang The Greatest Love of All
accompanied by his own piano playing. Jordin Sparks
then gave an emotional performance of I Will Always Love You. Tears fell throughout the crowd as the camera
panned over the audience. Two better singers
couldn’t have been picked to sing such a touching tribute.
Who doesn’t love Cee Lo Green
especially when he is paired up with Mighty Goodie Mob. They sang their new song Fight to Win which
was an explosive performance. They brought
back the white Adidas track suits which I loved because they looked like an old
school rap group. Then the dynamic group
paid a tribute to Adam Yach of the Beastie Boys singing (You Gotta Fight) For
Your Right (To Party!). It was a thrilling performance, especially when the crowd was scanned and Carrie Underwood
was singing along to the party song.
Nelly Furtado is back, but not
in a great way. Overall I was not
impressed with the performance at all.
Her new song Big Hoops is not her best work. Her vocal performance was mediocre at best,
and the outfit she was sporting was a tragic mess.
The Billboard Music Awards ended
on a very high note with Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. Their voices melted together perfectly as they
belted out some of Stevie’s greatest hits.
Stevie celebrated his birthday a couple days earlier and he got a late
birthday gift from Alicia, an a Capella version of Empire State of Mind. Stevie Wonder the King of Soul music was
awarded the Icon Award. He deserves this
prestigious award because he is truly an icon in music.
I enjoyed the 2012 Billboard
Music Awards overall, even though a few things were not in my taste. Most of the performances were amazing. I
always love seeing my favorite musical artists in one place together
performing, and applauding one another's accomplishments.
